How I Think Is How I Act – Romans 8:5

There is a verse in the book of Proverbs that starts out, “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he:…” (Pro 23:7Pro 23:7
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

7 For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.

).  This takes away any excuse of randomness in my actions.  In other words, the things that I do are the direct result of a process that begins in my mind.  The word “are” in Romans 8:5Romans 8:5

refers to my walk, my lifestyle, my ways.  It is in the Present tense so it points to the life I am living right now.  I am living the way I am living as a result of the way I am thinking.  If I pursue the “things of the flesh” (Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: – Gal 5:20-21Gal 5:20-21

) it is because my mind is centered on Christ and He is my source.

I have to constantly re-evaluate what I value.  I have to continually check my priorities.  I have to live in the awareness of what I am pursuing.  The world tries to lull us to sleep so that we live a life in a semi-conscious state only to wake up one day in realization that we wasted time and disregarded the opportunities of the Spirit.  This spiritual battle of a conscious pursuit of God is the struggle between flesh and spirit.  The stakes are life and death:  will my Christian life resemble spiritual life or death?

I have to constantly be aware of the environment and those who I pursue in fellowship.  If my environment is characterized by the works of the flesh or those surrounding me are living according to the flesh, I have to re-prioritize and evaluate whether I need to change my environment.  Many churches believe they are only centered in Christ and only preach the Word of God, but when you get inside the door, there is only strife, wrath and division.  This is not healthy.  This is not the mind of the Spirit.  Where there is no peace, longsuffering, gentleness, or meekness, there is not a true work of the Spirit.  Again, the stakes are life and death:  will I live a resurrection-powered life or will I live a life that mirrors who I was before I came to Christ?

Renewed Thought – Lord, give me the strength and focus to re-evaluate my values and priorities today.  Root out those things that are not centered on You.  Root out those relationships that draw my mind away from You.  Be the Source of my strength and every thought.

Fruit of the Spirit – Galatians 5:22-23

A single piece of fruit contains all that characteristics and qualities that define it.  We don’t define an orange by just the skin.  An orange is made up of a stem (if you live in Florida or California!), sections we eat, seeds to reproduce, and of course, the skin.  But when we look at an orange and talk about it as an “orange,” we are talking about it in its entirety, not just the skin.  The singular “fruit” stands in contrast to all the “works” of the flesh (Galatians 5:19-21Galatians 5:19-21
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, 21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

).  The Holy Spirit produces something in us consistent and whole.  All of the characteristics of the fruit of the Spirit are characteristics of God Himself.  They form a singular picture of God Himself working in us and through us.

God is genuine.  He doesn’t produce cheap imitations.  The Spirit of God doesn’t depend on the flesh to bring us to the point of living a life pleasing to Him.  We are called to total dependency.  We are called to operate in a world that isn’t seen with the eyes.  This is the realm and environment where the Spirit operates.  It is a place where external evidence isn’t enough.  It is a place where the whole picture matters more than the individual parts.  It is a place where God can really speak to us if we’ll listen.  He wants us to know Him!  Imagine the God who is the Creator of everything we see in the universe wants to have an intimate relationship with us!

(Colossians 1:9-10Colossians 1:9-10
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

9 For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; 10 That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;

Our walk is dependent on knowing Him.  Our consistency depends on our relationship with Him.  This frees us from the burden of manufactured holiness.  We are loosed from pressure to create faithfulness.  The Spirit produces all of the qualities and characteristics in us that define the Christian life.  This is life the way it was meant to be lived in Christ!  Step away from the weight you bear to “try” to live consistently for God.  Lay aside your vain attempts to produce something in yourself you will never be capable of producing.  Embrace the resurrection life of Christ imparted to you.  Seek a deeper relationship with the Lord on your knees.  Allow the Spirit to produce fruit in your life.  The world will see a singular picture of God Himself working in you and through you.

Renewed Thought – No man can expect to make progress in holiness who is not often and long alone with God.  - Author Unknown
